    The Process of Repointing

Throughout the life of any brick structure, repointing is needed. Repointing offers an affordable way to restore the brick structure of your wall or chimney. By taking out the damaged mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar, you preserve the surrounding bricks from harsh outdoor elements. However, repointing is a dusty job, which demands the help of a professional mason using the proper skills and tools.

    When Do You Need Repointing

Once you see loose bricks, it is a warning signal to do repointing to your whole brick structure. Below are more things to watch out for:

    • Stair-stepped Cracks. If you see cracks shaped in the formation of stairs which are visible in the upper or lower part of the brick structure, this may be a sign of damage in the brick foundation.

    • Spalling Bricks. Spalling is an effect of water damage, and it results in the peeling, popping or flaking off of the brick surface.

    • Tilting Brick Structure. Once you notice that the brick structure is shifting out of place, you will need to address this issue immediately before it gets more out of hand.

    • Growing Weeds between Joints. Don’t pull off weeds as these might cause bigger problems. To be safe, a proper action must be taken to remove the weeds before actually fixing mortar joints.

If your brick structure shows any of these signs, immediately contact an expert brick pointer. At Perth Tuckpointing, our team of experts is more than willing to help you with your repointing needs, so give them a call today.
